David Alter is a graduate of the University of Health Sciences at the Chicago Medical School and completed his internship in Clinical Psychology through the University of Minnesota Internship Consortium before obtaining his PhD in Clinical Psychology in 1991. His 20 years of overall clinical experience in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis - St. Paul, MN) involve the practice of health psychology (mind-body medicine) and neuropsychology (the relationship of brain function to behavior). His professional work focuses on teaching patients how to utilize their innate healing resources to address a wide range of psychological, psychophysiological and interpersonal challenges.

In addition to his therapy practice he is an active teacher at local and national conferences, training clinicians in the use of clinical hypnosis to address problems of mind and body and also provides clinical supervision to other professionals locally. He serves as a consultant to a large HMO in the Twin Cities with a particular emphasis on the interface of health psychology with neurological conditions, as a consultant to a large gastroenterology ("gut") medical group practice, and as a consultant to the medical staff of a Twin Cities-based Fortune 500 company.

His therapy work involves individuals, couples and groups who have a variety of presenting concerns, including pain-related conditions, such as IBS, different types of headache, and chronic fatigue/fibromyalgia or other pain conditions, as well as many mood and anxiety-related conditions.

He has a longstanding interest in a wide range of healing approaches involving how mind (informed energy) and body (matter) interact to produce positive change. Those explorations are being put into practical application through our group-based health & wellness programs developed by PPP's Center for Partners in Healing Program.

He is a co-founder and General Manager and Clinical Director of Partners in Healing and the co-founder of the Partners in Healing Center.

Medical-legal Consultation Services

Given his expertise in the area of mind-body interactions, Dr. Alter is periodically called upon by attorneys or insurance companies to answer questions about what might be impacting a patient's level of functioning, what can be expected in terms of a reasonable level of recovery following an injury or illness, and the degree of cause and effect that can be established between a specific event (e.g. an injury) and the degree of persisting symptoms or level of functioning that the patient subsequently exhibits.
